Performance Enhancer
Team:
Project Manager & Designer (My role)
Electrical Engineer: Developed hardware components for the wearable suite.
Software Engineer: Coded the iPad app, ensuring real-time data syncing.
Project Overview
This project focused on developing a smart wearable suite designed to help athletes improve their posture and optimize performance. The system included hardware and software components that monitor, analyze, and provide feedback on body posture during training.
The solution featured a wearable suite that captures real-time data, along with an iPad app for trainers to monitor athletes’ posture and provide immediate insights.
Problem Statement
Athletes often struggle with maintaining optimal posture, which can impact their performance and increase the risk of injury. Existing solutions were costly and did not offer seamless integration between the wearable device and real-time feedback systems.
Project Goals
Develop a cohesive brand identity across all products.
Design an innovative wearable suite that improves posture analysis and has ownership over its parts.
Create a user-friendly UX & UI for a connected app to monitor athletes' progress and enable coaches to assign devices and track multiple athletes.
Solution
1. Smart Wearable Suite
Cost Efficiency: Reduced parts cost to $80 per unit, making the solution more affordable and accessible for teams and individual athletes.
Data-Driven Insights: The wearable uses sensors to capture critical posture data in real-time, which is then displayed on the iPad app.
2. iPad App Interface
Athlete Management: Coaches can add new users, assign devices, and view live reports of athletes’ posture data.
User Interface: The app interface was designed to be intuitive for quick navigation. Key features include:
- Add New Athletes: Simple form with fields for athlete’s name, sport, weight, and height.
- Live Report Feature: Coaches can access real-time feedback on athlete posture.
- Device Assignment: List of available devices that coaches can assign to specific athletes.
3. Brand Identity & User Experience
Branding: Developed a brand identity that conveys reliability, innovation, and athletic performance.
UX/UI Design: Employed a dual-tone color palette (blue and red) for easy visual differentiation between “Athletes” and “In Training” sections. The layout is optimized for quick interactions, especially for coaches working with multiple athletes simultaneously.
Design Process
This project followed the Double Diamond Design Process to guide the development from research to final delivery.
Double Diamond Stages:
Discover & Define: Identified key pain points related to athletic posture and usability of wearable tech.
Develop & Deliver: Prototyped and tested the app interface with athletes and coaches, refining it based on user feedback to ensure the app met practical training needs.
Challenges
Reducing Production Costs: Initial costs were high (estimated at $850 per unit). Through redesign and material selection, we reduced parts cost to $80.
Seamless Data Integration: Ensuring real-time, accurate data transfer from wearable sensors to the app required extensive testing and optimization.
Results
Cost-Effective Solution: Brought production cost down to $80, while maintaining a competitive selling price of $1,500.
Efficient Project Delivery: Completed all deliverables within a 4-month timeline, including prototyping, testing, and branding.
Key Deliverables
Wearable Device: Low-cost wearable suite that captures real-time posture data.
iPad App: Interface for coaches to monitor athlete progress and assign devices.
Brand Identity: A unified visual and strategic identity for the product line.
eCommerce Website: Developed a platform for online sales and customer engagement.
